A fools hope fue un tema que originalmente nació en un ensayo de la banda y que armamos casi por completo entre Diego, Julian y yo, particularmente me gusta la fuerza que tiene el tema y las dinámicas que maneja, es un tema complejo e interesante.

Para mi lo mejor son las estrofas y el coro, en una entrevista realizada hace poco para n medio americano me preguntaron el por que decidí usar phaser en este solo, puesto que suena un poco gracioso y pues la verdad este solo me causo grandes problemas debido a la base sobre la cual esta compuesto, a veces hacer solos sobre amalgamas rítmicos es difícil por lo complejo que resulta hacer un fraseo coherente, el phaser me ayudo mucho a generar el efecto música que deseaba, puesto que llevaba muchas tomas tratando de hacer algo que realmente me gustara.

En cuanto a la letra, es una expresión de cosas que sentía en ese momento, como algunos ya saben yo soy empresario y tengo una academia de música aquí en Colombia, he intentado varias cosas para ampliar la cobertura de la academia pero la crisis financiera nos ha tocado muy duro a nosotros, de las diferentes cosas que he intentado este año con la academia casi ninguna me ha salido, fue así como salio la idea para la letra y no exagero si digo que la escribí en 15 minutos.

A Fools hope was written in a rehearsal, Diego, Julian and I wrote the music for the song, I like the strength and the dynamics of it, it’s a complex but interesting one.

I love the verses and the chorus of this song, I was asked in an interview for a USA media, about why did I used a Phase shifter on the guitar solo, because it sounds a bit funny I’ve said but to be honest, this one was the hardest to create of the entire EP, the rhythm changes behind the solo makes it hard to create interesting melodies, I tried like a thousand times but didn’t find anything I really liked, then turned on the phase shifter and the solution to my problems came in a green Boss box, after that it was really easy to create the solo.

The lyrics of the song are about a lot of things I was feeling at the time, as many of you know I own a music academy here in Colombia, the financial crisis the world has been suffering also reached us, I’ve tried many things to over come that but it’s been hard, thanks God I have Artemist because for the academy it’s been a hard year, many of the projects we’ve started didn’t reach the end, so I was very frustrated at the time, I wrote the song lyrics in about 15 minutes, and by the way things are going a lot better now.

Esta canción comenzó con una idea que trajo Diego a un ensayo, comenzamos a trabajarla para desarrollar un tema con varias dinámicas musicales y una parte instrumental que fuera interesante musicalmente hablando.

Realmente fue un tema sencillo de trabajar y es más un esfuerzo conjunto de Diego, Julian y mió, esto nos llevo a terminar la canción rápidamente. Me gustan mucho las guitarras de los coros, son muy sencillas realmente pero contrastan muy bien con la base que hacen Diego y Julian, algo que si me puedo apuntar como propios en este tema son las melodías de las voces y la letra.

La letra habla acerca de las adicciones, lo que es querer dejar algo y no poder hacerlo, sentirse mal por saber que te haces daño a ti mismo ,pero sentirse peor por saber que la solución esta en tus manos y no puedes hacer nada al respecto.

This song was created over an idea Diego brought to a rehearsal, we started to work it out and we wanted to crate a song with many dynamic changes and an interesting instrumental part.

It was an Easy song for us to complete, it’s more a team effort than an individual one, I personally love the guitar lines in the chorus, very simple, but high contrast against the music base created by Diego and Julian, something I can say a did by myself are the vocal lines and the lyrics.

The song lyric it’s really about addictions, about wanting to leave something and not been able to do it, feel bad about yourself, knowing that the solutions lies in your hands but you cant take it, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Este tema es tal ves el que se escribió de forma mas bizarra, si pudieran escuchar la versión sobre la que comenzamos trabajar les causaría mucha gracia puesto que poco o nada tiene que ver con la versión que quedo en el EP.

Este tema es el mas sencillo de todos pero personalmente es uno de los que mas me gusta, en especial el coro, puesto que me tomo varias horas hacer la figura de las guitarras y montarle la melodía de la voz, me gusta mucho la amalgama rítmica del coro y el solo como tal me parece muy sentido.

La letra la escribí pensando en un amigo de mi esposa que esta metido en una relación un poco tormentosa. La letra básicamente habla acerca de querer dejar una persona pero no poder hacerlo, habla sobre la falta de fuerza de voluntad que como seres humanos todos tenemos en una medida otra.

This song was created in a very bizarre way; if you could listen to the pre production track you couldn’t understand what happened to the song because it sounds complete different to the final result.

This song it’s the simple one of the band but personally I love this track, the chorus took me many hours to get it finished, the guitars and the vocals took a lot of work to get them right the way I wanted, love the solo, was created very easily, things kind of flow naturally that day…

The lyrics are about a friend of my wife who is trying to get out of a hard relationship, the lyrics talk about the lack of will we as humans have in one way or another.

Este tema fue compuesto después de ver la convención republicana por CNN, la verdad me sentí muy ofendido por el discurso de John Mccain en el sentido que desde mi punto de vista no era mas que una manipulación de los votantes.

Frases como soy el único que puede protegerlos del terrorismo y cosas así al principio me causaron gracia pero luego me causaron preocupación al pensar que de pronto podía ser elegido presidente.

Desde ese día en lo personal leo mas y veo menos televisión, me di cuenta que todos somos manipulados por medio de nuestros miedos para comprar o hacer diferentes cosas con el fin de sentirnos seguros o conformes socialmente con nuestro aspecto y o condición social.

El tema como tal fue compuesto todo en menos de dos horas lo cual es un record personal para mi, musicalmente no tiene demasiadas cosas, me gustan los amalgamas de la parte instrumental, en especial el del solo, es un reto hacer un solo a esa velocidad con una base rítmica completamente irregular.

I wrote this song after watching the republican convention on CNN, to be honest I was offended by John Mccains speech, from my point of view it was a constant manipulation of the people.

Things he said like we are the ones who can Project America from a terrorist attack, first made me laugh but I got worried when I realized he could be elected as president.

From that day I try to watch less TV and try to read more, I realized how all of us are manipulated by the media to do or buy things we don really want or need, just to feel fine about the way we look or our social condition for example.

The song was written in 2 hours, a personal record for me, the song it’s pretty basic, I do like the guitar solo, it’s hard to play a fast solo when the rhythm is having constant changes.

“No Regrets” nació originalmente de un tema de Julian, el me paso unas ideas que tenia y yo comencé a trabajar sobre ellas hasta lograr el resultado que ya todos conocen.

Este tema a nivel musical es muy complejo, no solo por la cantidad de amalgamas rítmicas que tiene, si no por las modulaciones, por ejemplo los solos de la parte instrumental que van subiendo cromáticamente hasta llegar a la tonalidad objetivo que a su vez es dominante de la tonalidad principal.

El amalgama rítmico mas interesante es el que se encuentra en Eb menor, en donde hacemos 5/4, 3/8, 5/4, ¾.

La letra la escribió Julian, estaba pasando por un mal momento esos días y se inspiro para escribirla, realmente nunca he sabido para quien o hacia quien esta dirigida la canción pero si lo averiguo les cuento.

Personalmente es uno de mis temas favoritos, tiene mucha fuerza, lo que se adapta muy bien a la agresividad de la letra.

“No Regrets” was created over a song Julian had written before, he passed me the main ideas and I started to work on them in order to get the result all of you know.

This song is really complex, it has a los of rhythm changes and a lot of key changes as well, the solos are a clear example of this as the move chromatically to reach the target key, and this key is the dominant key of the chorus.

The rhythm has a part where we had to rehearse a lot to accomplish, we play a 5/4, 3/8, 5/4 and a ¾.

Julian wrote the lyrics, has was having a bad time then, I don’t know who it was written to, or who inspired the song, but if I find out I’ll let you know.

I love this song, it’s fast, love the intro, love to play it live and I believe the music and the lyrics work great together

La idea para este tema nació cuando aun estaba en la universidad, vi a un compañero baterista haciendo unos estudios de ritmo y ejecutando figuras en 7/8, el sonido particular de las figurar llamo mi atención y decidí componer algo usando este recurso, fue así como nació la figura inicial del tema.

Adicional a esto quería hacer un tema en 3/4 desde hacia mucho tiempo y por eso decidí que la mayor parte del tema se moviera en esta métrica.

El pre coro y el coro son sencillos pero me parece que son muy efectivos musicalmente, la parte interesante del tema para mi personalmente es la parte instrumental, nuestro baterista comenzó a molestar con una base para chill out y Julian comenzó a realizar una figura muy interesante en Tapping, yo decidí hacer una figura similar, mas por el aspecto visual y la puesta en escena que por el aspecto musical, esto ha traído buenos comentarios acerca de la puesta en vivo de la banda.

La parte instrumental realiza un pequeño viaje tonal que nos permitió volver a la tonalidad principal del tema (Fm) y retomar el coro para terminar el tema.

Letra:

La letra de este tema habla de la frustración que muchos sentimos cuando somos obligados a estudiar o a llevar carreras que no son de nuestro agrado, es un poco triste desarrollar una carrera profesional cuando no es lo que nos llena, cuando trabajamos por cumplirle a otras personas, hacemos un sin fin de cosas y nos damos cuenta que posiblemente todo lo que hacemos lo hacemos para acercarnos a ninguna parte.

The main idea for this song was created when I was attending El bosque University, saw a drum student doing 7/8 meter figures, the sound caught my attention and I decided to write something using that, that’s how the first lick was created.

I’ve been working at the time on a ¾ meter song so I decided to use it and mix the songs, the bridge and the chorus are very basic for me, but they are effective, its hard for me not to over elaborate when I write new music.

For the instrumental part our drummer started to play this pattern, Julian decided to do a tapping figure, I had a lot of trouble trying to get something that I liked, but finally I decided to use a tapping figure very distant from the one Julian was doing, it turned out to be one of the things people always talk about when we play live.

We did a little tonal journey in order to reach Fm again and finish the song, we did two chorus at the end of this song using a vocal variation on the second one.

Lyrics:

This song it’s about the frustration we all feel when we are forced to do or to take paths we don’t want to, when we work for other people, but not for ourselves, then we realize we are doing a lot of stuff and its getting us close to nowhere.

La idea para este tema nació de unos estudios de tapping que estaba realizando es esos días, busque una forma de aplicar lo aprendido y cree el riff del inicio.

Para las estrofas la idea era hacer algo con amalgamas rítmicos, lo cual siempre me ha gustado, la amalgama funciona 4, 2, 4, 3.

El precoro no tiene nada raro solo era algo para cambiar la dinámica y llegar al coro, el coro aunque muy básico a nivel instrumental es muy elaborado a nivel vocal, eso fue algo que me saco canas pero quede muy contento con el resultado final.

La parte instrumental fue algo que se creo durante los ensayos con la banda, la idea era hacer un puente con mucho espacio para poder realizar un solo de bajo, de batería y subir la dinámica para llegar al solo de guitarra. Una cosa curiosa de esta parte del tema es la modulación, el tema viene todo el tiempo en Dm, una modulación muy lógica seria pasar a F, en mi caso preferí hacer una modulación directa a Fm pero mantuve la línea vocal en el mismo registro para el último coro, lo cual fue un poco difícil de montar a nivel vocal pero el resultado es genial.

Left Unsaid es uno de mis temas favoritos y disfruto mucho tocándolo en especial por la respuesta del publico cada vez que la figura en tapping comienza a sonar…

Letra:

Cuando estaba terminando la canción tuve una tragedia familiar, perdí a una persona cercana y comencé a cuestionarme el hecho de dedicar demasiado tiempo a mis cosas personales y no a mi familia, una frase que se me metió en la cabeza ese día fue: Lo único que me quedo de esa persona eran los recuerdos y las palabras que nunca le pude decir y que ya nunca podría hacerlo.

The main idea for this song was taken from some tapping studios I was doing at the time, I was looking for a way to use what I was learning and created the songs first lick.

For the verse my idea was to create something with meter changes, as you have noticed I love meter and key changes in our songs, the meter for this part works: 4,2,4,3

For the bridge all I wanted was t change the dynamics of the song and arrive to the chorus, the chorus, pretty basic for the instruments, is hard for Edgar, the melody was something really problematic for me at first, but I’m very happy with the final result.

The instrumental part was created during a band rehearsal, the main idea was to create a part with a lot of space to make a bass and drum solo, rise the dynamic, and get to the guitar solo, I love the key change in this part, from Dm to Fm, what is really interesting here, is that I managed to maintain the vocal range, Edgar just needed to adjust some pitches, it was hard at first but we love the final result.

Left Unsaid is one of my favorite songs, love to play it live, and people love this song.

Lyrics:

When I was finishing this song I’ve had a family loss, a close person to me died, this made me wonder if I was dedicating to much time to my job and personal stuff and not to my family, “all that remains from him are memories and all th thing I couldn’t say, now I will never have chance to…”

This keeps ringing in my head even to this day…
